The European Parliament’s Resolution Concerning Removal of Child in Japan
Yomiuri Shimbun, GOTO: The European Parliament adopted a resolution concerning removal of child early this morning. Can you please tell us MOFA’s reaction to this?
Mr. OHTAKA Masato, Press Secretary: I am aware that the resolution concerning removal of child in Japan was adopted at the plenary session of the European Parliament on July 8.
For cases within Japan that are not subject to the Hague Convention, I would like to state that the Government of Japan has responded in a fair and just manner regardless of the nationality of the people, based on Japanese law.
For cases that are subject to the Hague Convention, Japan has consistently responded appropriately through cooperation with the central authorities of the EU countries based on the Convention. I believe there is no reason to doubt Japan’s efforts and compliance, and the resolution’s assertion that Japan is not complying with international rules is completely incorrect.
The Government of Japan has repeatedly explained Japan’s legislation and efforts to the EU and related countries, and will continue to appropriately respond.
NHK, WATANABE: In relation to this, it seems that this response by the European Parliament was taken based on their logic, that they do not understand the way of thinking in Japan and basically have doubts about Japan’s laws, systems, and human rights conditions. I have experience covering this when I conducted reporting related to the Ministry of Justice. That being said, I do not necessarily believe that is the actual reality. What is your view on the background for this?
Press Secretary OHTAKA: The Government of Japan has been thoroughly explaining our firm efforts for human rights through various opportunities, and I believe we have received a certain degree of understanding in the EU. However, I would like to refrain from commenting here based on our various speculations regarding the background of this resolution.
In any event, we will continue to respond appropriately in order to receive understanding regarding Japan’s efforts from various countries, including European countries.
